UV Printer vs Laser Engraver: Do You Need Both?

Once you've got a laser, the next question many makers ask is whether a UV printer is worth adding. They can look like competing machines, but they really do different jobs. Here's how I think about it.

What a laser does

A laser removes or marks material with light. It can cut shapes out of wood and acrylic and engrave designs into wood, leather, glass, metal and more. The result is usually one tone: the natural color of the burned, etched or marked material.

What a UV printer does

A UV printer sprays ink onto the surface and instantly cures it with UV light. That means full color, directly on rigid items. The xTool Omni O1 prints CMYK plus white ink and varnish, so it can do gloss, matte and foil-style effects and even raised, textured prints up to 7 mm. It prints on acrylic, wood, metal, glass, ceramic and phone cases.

Where they work together

The magic happens when you combine them. A laser cuts the shape, and the UV printer adds the color. The full-color acrylic charms on my birth flower earrings are a good example of what UV printing makes possible: crisp, vivid flowers on clear acrylic that a laser alone couldn't produce.

Do you need both?

  • Mostly cutting and engraving wood, leather or metal? Start with a laser.
  • Want full-color products like charms, phone cases, keychains or signs? A UV printer opens up a whole new product line.
  • Selling custom merch or gifts? Many makers find the combination pays off because customers love color.

And if you're looking at heat-pressed items like shirts or sublimation, the xTool WonderPress is another way to add color to your lineup.

See it for yourself in Muskego

Reading specs only gets you so far. As an xTool Squad host, I run these machines every day in my Muskego, Wisconsin shop, and you can see them work in person or on a live video call. Bring your own material and we'll test it. In a demo you can watch a print come off the Omni O1 and feel the raised texture for yourself.
